Tired of “selling yourself” to find a job? Try this three-step approach instead
In the ever-evolving landscape of job hunting, the notion of "selling yourself" has become a ubiquitous mantra. I am guilty of coaching my clients that they are the product and they need to sell their unique benefits. However, for many, the idea of pitching oneself like a product on a shelf feels disingenuous and uncomfortable. After all, we are not all salespeople.
So, if you're tired of the sales-focused approach and are seeking a more genuine way to land your dream job, you're in the right place. Here’s my three-step approach that prioritizes understanding the unique needs of the job, offering solutions, and emphasizing cultural fit over self-promotion.
Step One: Understand the unique needs and challenges of the job
Every company hires a position because they either have a need to be filled or a problem that needs to be solved. Understanding this challenge of the job will allow you to position yourself in a way that makes you seem like the perfect fit.
Now, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach for all the jobs you are looking at. To make sure you truly understand the challenge, don’t just skim the job description, study it. Research the company and get a good understanding of what they are working on and what are the challenges the industry is facing.
Step Two: Show up with solutions
Once you understand the unique needs and challenges of the job, it’s time to show that you can provide a solution. Showing up with solutions will make you stand out more. The other candidates are just going to rambling on and on about everything they’ve done because they want it to be about them. I get it, you’ve done some really cool things and I’m not saying don’t talk about it or be proud of it, just know what the right time to tell the story.
The harsh truth is this… it’s not about you. It’s about them. It’s about showing them that even if you haven’t solved the company’s specific challenge yet, you know that your past roles have prepared you for this moment and you have the exact skills needed to excel.
Step Three: Emphasize fit
A company doesn’t just want the perfect skills and experiences (or we would all be replaced by robots and AI in no time). While it's essential to highlight your qualifications and achievements, equally important is demonstrating how you align with the company culture and values. Employers aren't just looking for someone who can do the job; they're also seeking candidates who will integrate seamlessly into their team and contribute positively to the organization's goals.
One of the top ways to showcase your fit with the company’s culture – be authentic. Just be you! Laugh, tell stories, and show them what they would get if they hired you… not just your skills.
In a world where authenticity reigns supreme, trying to do something that doesn’t feel natural just needs to go. And by adopting a more thoughtful and empathetic approach, centered on understanding the job's challenges, offering tailored solutions, and emphasizing cultural fit, you can stand out in a crowded job market. So, the next time you find yourself preparing for an interview or crafting a cover letter, remember: it's not about selling yourself—it's about showing how you can add value and contribute meaningfully to the organization. Embrace your authenticity, showcase your problem-solving skills, and let your genuine passion shine through. With this approach, you'll not only land a job but also find a workplace where you truly belong.
